Ambiguity-Reduction: a Satisficing Criterion for Decision Making
نویسندگان
چکیده
In the domain of decision making under uncertainty we propose the Multiple Source Evaluation Model, focusing on (1) how information coming from different evidential sources, either converging or diverging, is integrated and (2) how Ignorance, Uncertainty and Contradiction are evaluated and reduced before deciding in ambiguous domains. We argue that these operations involve an unique satisficing strategy, ambiguity-reduction. We introduce the Two Cards Gambling Game experimental paradigm and we present two experiments for exploring the main empirical implications of the model.

Satisficing Awakens: Models to Mitigate Uncertainty
Satisficing, as an approach to decision-making under uncertainty, aims at achieving solutions that satisfy the problem’s constraints as well as possible. Mathematical optimization problems that are related to this form of decision-making include the P-model of Charnes and Cooper (1963), where satisficing is the objective, as well as chance-constrained and robust optimization problems, where sat...
متن کاملThinking Styles and Regret in Physicians
BACKGROUND Decision-making relies on both analytical and emotional thinking. Cognitive reasoning styles (e.g. maximizing and satisficing tendencies) heavily influence analytical processes, while affective processes are often dependent on regret. The relationship between regret and cognitive reasoning styles has not been well studied in physicians, and is the focus of this paper. METHODS A reg...
متن کاملCognitive constraints, contraction consistency, and the satisficing criterion
A theory of decision making is proposed that offers an axiomatic basis for the notion of “satisficing” postulated by Herbert Simon. The theory relaxes the standard assumption that the decision maker always fully perceives his preferences among the available alternatives, requiring instead that his ability to perceive any given preference be decreasing with respect to the complexity of the choic...
متن کاملSatisficing and bounded optimality A position paper
Since the early days of artificial intelligence there has been a constant search for useful techniques to tackle the computational complexity of decision making. By now, it is widely accepted that optimal decision making is in most cases beyond our reach. Herbert Simon’s approach based on satisficing offers a more realistic alternative, but it says little on how to construct satisficing algorit...
